Eco - The Story so Far

The Journey 2000 - 2009

The journey began in Autumn 2000 – a failing school in disarray, ineffective leadership, standards low, pupils lacking self-esteem - too many with poor attitudes and behaviour, and a divided community.

A new head with a clear, child-centred vision and an inspirational teacher with a passion for environmental education and practical, hands-on experience, began to lead a mission under the banner ‘Working Together for Success’.

The first step was to give pupils a voice, listen to them and respond with action in order to build their feelings of self-worth – after all, it was their school and their future!!

The school grounds had great potential and were seen to be the ideal vehicle to begin changing the whole culture of the school. The children were consulted, their views considered, an Eco-Club established and an action plan produced. The work began, with Eco-Days at weekends creating wonderful occasions when the whole school community rolled up their sleeves to ‘get stuck in!’

Step-by-step, over a period of years, and with additional support from local businesses and organisations, the school’s Eco Warriors led a transformation of the grounds from a canvas of plain green and grey to a kaleidoscope of beauty, interest and inspiration where pupils can relax, socialise, reflect and learn in total security.

In 2004, we were pleased that Ofsted recognised the impact of our work on pupils’ attitudes ‘The school’s promotion of looking after the environment has caught the children’s imagination. This is reflected in the Eco-Warriors’ successful campaigns to create wildlife areas, a willow classroom and trim trail. They are justly proud of their Eco School status….’

Four Eco-Schools Green Flags and another successful Ofsted on from the start of our journey, the hearts and minds of pupils and the whole school community have been transformed – standards are high, pupils attitudes and behaviour outstanding (Ofsted 2008), parents supportive and the school oversubscribed.

So that’s the end you may think – not at Boston West!

Whilst our eco-work continues in all its forms and our carbon footprint reduces, a dream project is unfolding - to build a sustainable ‘Education and Extended Services Centre’ as an integral part of our environmental area.

We will create a superb modern asset for our school and the local community that will make a powerful statement that emphasises our commitment to global sustainability.
